MacLaren VanGo is well known for original arts based programming intended for students from Grade 1 through to Grade 8. It is designed to bring regional artists into the classroom to deliver art-based experiences in a manner that is accessible, educational and appealing. New this fall is "VanGo Gallery" an innovative studio based programme, using exhibitions as inspiration for a full day of art making. We are pleased to offer discounted busing rates for this experience.
Senior regional artist will work with students to enhance their understanding of artistic practice and focus on projects indicative of current exhibitions.

Colour Magic

(suggested K - 2) ½ Day $200
This programme is designed to engage young children in the exploration of both primary and secondary colours. The programme will delight participants with interactive components, giving students an opportunity to discover, experiment, and create using watercolour.
The focus of this programme is on colour as an element of art.
- Recognize the names of primary and secondary colours.
- Recognize the name of warm and cool colours.
Explore how colour creates an effect or mood, and communicates feelings.
Shaping The Imagination

(suggested 1 - 3) ½ Day $200
Students will explore the nature of line and shape to create form. Using basic geometric shapes, participants will transform their design into an engaging work of art. This programme is designed around the concept of abstraction, encouraging students to take risks using oil pastels and watercolour.
The focus of this programme is on shape as an element of art.
- Discuss geometric and organic shapes and forms.
- Identify the elements of design in familiar environments (shapes in the classroom).

NEW What a Relief (suggested 2 – 3) ½ Day $200
Students discover how texture can be used to make an artwork richer and more interesting. Using a variety of materials, they will come to understand how texture can be fundamental in object recognition, in artist depictions, and in creating a feel for an artwork. Achieve the effects of visual textures using line drawing, and create tactile texture via a mixed-media relief sculpture.
The focus of this programme is on texture as an element of art.
- Describe different kinds of texture – visual and tactile.
- Describe the texture of various familiar objects, using vocabulary and terminology appropriate for this grade.
- Identify the elements of design in familiar environments (textures in the classroom).
- Learn about and create a relief sculpture.
NEW Starry Night (suggested 2 – 3) ½ Day $200
Young students will be spellbound to find what they are capable of when they try a centuries old printing technique, paper marbling. Get a double dose of printmaking by embellishing your papers further with a lino printing experience. Understand how our name sake, Vincent van Gogh, uses line, texture and colour to create a particular mood in one of his most famous works, and emulate it in your own style.
The focus of this programme is on colour and line as elements of art.
- Recognize and name the warm and cool colours, and describe their emotional impact.
- Identify types/characteristics of lines in artworks and in the environment.
- Identify the foreground, middle ground, and background, and identify objects in these areas of a work.
- Make artistic choices in their work, using line and colour to communicate feelings and mood.
Junior
Shape Shifting
½ Day $200
Students will weave colour theory and shape exploration into the study of one object. Using drawing and printmaking, participants change the look of a form through different techniques and processes.
The focus of this programme is on shape as an element of art.
- Discuss geometric and organic shapes and forms.
- Identify the elements of design in familiar environments (shapes in the classroom).
- Discuss negative and positive shapes and spaces in an artwork.
Learn how artists use the elements of design such as shape to create artworks.
Dada And Me
 ½ Day $200
Using the graphic arts, students will create a poster, taking elements of self-portraiture, text and overlapping images to create perspective. One colour will be added as a surprise element to create a focal point. Letter stencils and drawing tools are the main medium for this programme.
- Introduction to Dada, self-portraiture, perspective, and composition.
- Explore the use of art in media.
- Consider one-point perspective.
- Use line to create a focal point.
Use collage as a means of overlapping images and shapes.
NEW Everyday Objects ½ Day $200
What is Found Object Art? Why do artists choose to create works of art using cast off or mundane items? Do you have something lying around the house that is not being used but that you can’t bear to throw away? Found something with a unique shape that is absolutely useless? Bring an object to class and turn it into something completely new, a found object sculpture. Challenge ways of seeing and thinking by taking a familiar object and creating a new context for it.
- Learn about Found Object and Assemblage art/artists, their origins and differences.
- Identify elements of design in a variety of natural and human-made objects.
- Understand the limitations of familiar art tools and discover the advantages of recycled materials.
NEW Mask Making Two ½ Days $375
Back by popular demand, but with a twist! Create a bizarre human/animal mask. Don’t worry, no more skin irritations or plaster covered hair. This time we will create the plaster masks over pre-formed molds.
- Identify symmetrical and asymmetrical shapes in both the human-made environment and the natural world.
- Produce a three dimensional work of art that communicates autobiographical thoughts and feelings.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the proper and controlled use of art tools, materials, and techniques individually and in combination.
Identify the function of visual arts in various communities
Intermediate
Body Wrap

Full Day $375
Students will explore the notion of self while creating a body mask. Students will use painted canvas and poles to apply images, symbols and colour. This is an opportunity for both dialogue and self-discovery through the artistic process. Teachers could develop a performance piece around this mask project.

Name Tags
½ Day $200
Popular culture uses signs and symbols to create a diverse language in much the same way graphic designers create logos for large companies like Nike or Gap. Combining both the language of graffiti and graphic design principles, students will have an opportunity to create a nametag or logo from their name.

- Describe how artists representing a variety of historical periods, styles and cultures have used elements and principles of design to create a specific effect.
- Identify ways in which the visual arts affect aspects of society and the economy.
Define a career path in the arts based in Graphic Design.

NEW Environmental Art ½ Day $200
In a general sense, environmental art helps improve our relationship with the natural world. Recycle materials into an art project that speaks of our environment and communicates personal thoughts and feelings regarding ecology, art and artistic responsibility. Items that might otherwise find their way into a landfill make some of the best artist materials. Find out how!
- Discover several types of environmental art and artists and learn what you can do artistically to help preserve our environment. Students will discover relationships between the environment and their creation.
