How to get an Exhibition

Interested in exhibiting your work?

The MacLaren Art Centre requires that all Exhibition Proposals contain the following:

i. Cover Letter
ii. Artist Statement
iii. Current Curriculum Vitae
iv. Maximum of 20 labelled images (slides or jpgs on cd)
v. Corresponding slide list or contact sheet (for digital images)
vi. Relevant Support Material
vii. S.A.S.E with proper return postage

i. Address the cover letter to a MacLaren Art Centre staff member. This is essentially a letter of introduction, which also contains your current mailing address and contact numbers.

ii. The artist statement should indicate the media, technique, theme or context of your artwork. It should also address any specific technical or spatial requirements regarding the installation of your work. Please limit this to 1-2 pages.

iii. Include a current copy of your CV or artist resume, listing your exhibition history and educational background. This should not exceed 2 pages.

iv. Include a maximum of twenty 35mm slides of your artwork. All slides should be labelled with your name, title of your artwork, corresponding number to the slide list, and a red dot in the lower left hand corner to ensure proper orientation when viewing. Do not send masters of your slides. Send duplicate copies in a plastic slide sheet for their protection. Please make every effort to ensure that your artwork is properly and accurately photographed. Please submit digital images of your work on a well-labelled cd.  Images should be 300 dpi and approx. 5" x 7" large.  In case of video or performance based works, include a VHS or DVD duplicate of the works. [*not required but helpful are 2 - 3, 8"x10", colour photocopies of your strongest works.]

v. Include a corresponding numbered list of slides or contact sheet, indicating title, medium, size and year of execution.

vi. If relevant include a selection of support material, such as copies of recent reviews or publications featuring your art work.

vii. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope with proper return postage.

Note: Please use standard white paper. Never send original artwork. Please use presentation folders - proposals that are bound or placed in three-ring binders are difficult to handle.

Please address your exhibition proposal to:
Carolyn Bell Farrell, Executive Director

or

Sarah Beveridge or Sandra Fraser, Curator

MacLaren Art Centre, 37 Mulcaster Street, Barrie, Ontario, Canada, L4M 3M2 (705) 721-9696

As per standard art gallery practice the MacLaren Art Centre’s exhibition schedule is programmed about 2 years in advance. This enables the MacLaren Art Centre to fulfill provincial and federal government funding requirements and provide adequate planning time to mount a significant exhibition that is supported through educational programmes and public relations.
